ENTIRE SAINTS TEAM TO TAKE PART IN MIRACLE LEAGUE BASEBALL CAMP
ST. PAUL, MN (July 8, 2014) – The St. Paul Saints have a unique program where they take their promotional show on the road to youth leagues around the Twin Cities area. As part of that traveling road show the Saints have traditionally made a stop at a Miracle League game. Through those relationships, and a partnership with Accurate HomeCare, a new endeavor was born. The entire Saints baseball team (players, coaches, and staff) will host a camp for Miracle League players in conjunction with Accurate HomeCare at Midway Stadium.
In what should be an incredible afternoon that is sure to touch many hearts, all 22 active Saints players plus the entire coaching staff will be on hand at Midway Stadium on Saturday, July 12 for a one of its kind baseball camp from 3:00-4:00 p.m. prior to the team taking batting practice. The Miracle League of Minnesota provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league. With this unique camp, Saints players and coaches will help the Miracle League players enjoy the fun of the game, give them instruction and even play a game on the same field that many Saints players have started or continued their professional careers. The 3:00 p.m. clinic is just the beginning of an afternoon fundraising event called Minnesota Sporting Together which is benefitting the Miracle League at Midway Stadium. Accurate HomeCare is promoting a ticket package with the clinic, and opportunity to watch Saints batting practice and get autographs, exclusive play time in the Saints kids zone with Twin Cities sports teams’ mascots, a ticket to Saturday night’s game against the Kansas City T-Bones, a Saints ball cap, and voucher for food and drink, all for only $25.
“We’ve participated in a number of wonderful community events during our 22 year history, but there may not be one more meaningful than this camp,” said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. “While there will definitely be joy on the kids faces when they get to learn and play with our team, this is a life changing event for our players and staff. This has been a long time in the making.”
The Miracle League provides players from 3-19, with disabilities, to play Miracle League baseball, regardless of ability. They play on a custom-designed field which incorporates a cushioned synthetic turf that accommodates wheelchairs and other walking assistance devices, while helping prevent injuries. It provides a level-playing field where physically and mentally challenged children can hit, run, and catch- just like the best of them.
“I have been involved with the Miracle League of Minnesota for some time, and it is an organization that I believe in because of the joy it brings to kids and families,” said Accurate HomeCare Founder and CEO Amy Nelson. “As a home healthcare provider, we see firsthand how difficult it can be for special needs families. Seeing the kids out on the field, having a great time playing baseball just like their mainstream peers is truly rewarding. We started the annual event, Minnesota Sporting Together, to spread awareness of this great organization, and to raise money to help build additional handicap-accessible fields so even more kids can play.”
The Miracle League provides every child an opportunity to hit the ball and score a run. Miracle League team members are assigned “buddies” who assist them in hitting the ball and "running" the bases. Buddies can be fellow schoolmates, parents, college students, business leaders or anyone who wishes to volunteer their time to give a child the gift of baseball.
