Exhibition Season Starts With An 8-3 Win For Saints

ST. PAUL, MN May 9, 2013

ST. PAUL, MN (May 9, 2013) – The long, cold off-season became a distant memory as the 2013 exhibition season got underway for the St. Paul Saints.  The bats were in mid-season form and the pitchers looked strong as the Saints defeated the defending North Division Champion, Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, 8-3, in a game shortened to four and a half innings because of rain, on Thursday morning at Midway Stadium in front of 3,094 school kids.

The big inning for the Saints came in the third when they sent 12 men to the plate and broke open a 1-1 game.  Dan Kaczrowski, who finished the game 3-3 with a double and two runs scored, led off with an infield single to third.  Joey Becker was hit by a pitch and Brad Boyer drilled one over the rightfield wall to give the Saints a 4-1 lead.  Craig Brazell and Willie Cabrera followed with walks before the Redhawks went to the bullpen for lefty Jake Laber.  With one out Jose Hernandez drove in a run with an infield single to short and a second run scored on the play from a throwing error by shortstop Zach Penprase to give the Saints a 6-1 lead.  With two outs Dwight Childs made it 7-1 with an RBI single and he would later score on a throwing error by second baseman Jose Garcia.

Anthony Claggett got the start for the Saints and pitched 3.0 strong innings.  His only hiccup came in the first when Penprase led off the game with an infield single, advanced to third on a throwing error by first baseman Brazell and scored on a sacrifice fly.  Claggett allowed one run on five hits while striking out three.

Matt Meyer pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Saints and Mikey Mehlich pitched the final innings allowing two runs on two hits.

The Saints first run of the game came in the first on back-to-back doubles by Kaczrowski and Becker.

The Saints will play their second exhibition game of the season on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field against the RedHawks.
