Final Move, Saints Sign Rookie Pitcher Before Roster Deadline

ST. PAUL, MN August 26, 2017

The American Association roster freeze was midnight on August 26 and the St. Paul Saints made one move prior to the deadline.  They signed rookie right-handed pitcher Andrew Gutierrez, who spent the 2017 season with Bravos de Leon of the Mexican League.

The 23-year-old, in his first season in professional baseball, went 1-3 with a 6.60 ERA in 14 games (nine starts) for Leon. In 43.2 innings pitched he allowed 39 runs (32 earned) on 43 hits while walking 34 and striking out 24. Opponents were batting .267 against him. He went at least 5.0 innings in three of his nine starts and struck out a career tying high, three batters four times. He pitched a perfect inning in relief on July 20 at Saraperos de Saltillo while striking out two.  His most dominant performance on the mound came on August 8 at Guerreros de Oaxaca when he tossed 6.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one.

Gutierrez finished his collegiate career at Indiana State University in 2015 as an outfielder. After redshirting in 2014, he hit .309 for the Sycamores with eight RBI, five doubles, a triple and scored 10 runs his senior season. He had three-straight multi-hit games. In the third game he went 4-8 with two runs scored against Evansville on March 29.

Prior to Indiana State, Gutierrez played for East Los Angeles Community College for two seasons. He earned All-American honors and was named team MVP as well as First Team All-Conference in 2013. In 2012, he was named Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-Conference.

In order to make room for Gutierrez the Saints released pitcher Matt Schuld.  The Saints roster now stands at 22, 10 pitchers and 12 hitters.

The Saints will finish up the second to last home stand against the Wichita Wingnuts  tonight at 7:05 p.m. at the same time at CHS Field before departing for Fargo-Moorhead to take on the RedHawks. They return home for the final regular season series of the season on Tuesday, August 29 against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:05 p.m.

Saints tickets continue to be a tremendous value. Tickets begin at $5 for the Treasure Island berm seating (available only on day of game in person at the box office), $6 for bleacher seats, $14 for outfield reserved, $16 for the drink rail and $18 for infield reserved and home plate reserved. Post-Game Fireworks Supershows (August 31) are an additional $3 per ticket. Tickets purchased on the day of the game are an additional $2 per ticket. Children under the age of 12 and seniors 65 and older receive $1 off the admission price. Children under 2 that don't require a seat are free.
