Pitching Dominates Exhibition Game as Saints and Goldeyes Tie 2-2

May 13, 2012 at 5:26 PM

ST. PAUL, MN (May 13, 2012) – The St. Paul Saints pitching staff continues to show how strong it is during the exhibition season as they tied the Winnipeg Goldeyes 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium in front of 1,408.

Saints starter Alberto Rolon went 5.0 strong innings allowing just one run on five hits while walking four and striking out two.  The lone run he allowed came in the fourth inning when Luis Alen scored as Matt Cusick doubled to right-center and the relay throw was dropped by the second baseman Chris Cates.

The Saints put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but came up empty against Ace Walker.  They finally broke through in the fourth when Shane Costa singled and scored on a two out double by Ronnie Bourquin.  Bourquin finished the game 2-4 with a double and an RBI.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Jon Townsend was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a bunt single by Jim Rapoport.  Rapoport reached base in four of five plate appearances with a single and three walks.  Cates moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt and Costa’s RBI groundout plated Townsend.

The Saints got another fantastic performance from their relievers as Billy Spottiswood pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, Chris Odegaard gave up one run in his inning of work and Dan Sattler pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Goldeyes scored the tying run in the eighth on an RBI single by Jon Weber.

The Saints final exhibition game takes place on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. between the same two teams at Midway Stadium.
