Saints 20th Season Kicks Off With Hiway Federal Credit Union World's Largest Game of Catch

May 03, 2012 at 2:06 PM

ST. PAUL, MN (May 3, 2012) – Only in downtown St. Paul can you see a pig wandering around, a nun giving massages and a carnival like atmosphere taking place.  Of course there is only one team that could pull off this kind of party as the St. Paul Saints host the Hiway Federal Credit Union World’s Largest Game of Catch, in conjunction with the Greater St. Paul Building and Managers Association, to kick off their 20th season.

The block party will take place on Wednesday, May 16 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and will be held on Robert Street between 6th Street and 7th Place.  The event serves as a kick-off to the 2012 season and fans are encouraged to bring their gloves.  Everyone in attendance will receive a free soft baseball with the Saints and Hiway Federal Credit Union logos.

Fans will have the chance to satisfy their taste buds with The Original Slyder® from White Castle (2 for $1), slices of pizza from Little Caesars (one slice for $1) and food from Noodles & Company.  Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery will be sampling its famous fresh cheese curds and will have packages available for sale. KLN will provide chips and licorice samples.  Proceeds from all food sales will be donated to the charity of their choosing.  Soda and water will be provided free of charge courtesy of the Saints and 7-UP.

The entire Saints team will be driven to the event on a trolley courtesy of Twin Cities Trolleys.  The team will take center stage around noon and manager George Tsamis will introduce his club.

Fans will have an opportunity to partake in a game of catch with their friends, colleagues and even Saints players and coaches.

After a month-long Name the Pig Contest presented by U.S. Bank Healthcare Payment Solutions (presenting sponsor of the 2012 Saints pig) and the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, the 2012 pig will be introduced and his name will be revealed.  In past seasons, names have coincided with sports icons (Brat Favre in 2010), local flair (Garrison Squeallor in 2007), national flavor (Boarack Ohama in 2008), baseball lore (The Great Hambino in 1998) and music style (Justin Bieboar in 2011, Hammy Davis Jr. in 2000, The Notorious P.I.G. – Piggy Smalls in 2003 and Squeal Diamond in 2004).

“This is one of those events that brings our fans, the downtown business community and the Twin Cities together,” said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer.  “As we kick off our 20th season this block party reminds our fans we’re all about fun.”

The Saints, Hiway Federal Credit Union and St. Paul BOMA will be joined by participating sponsors Renewal by Andersen, Xfinity, Walser Automotive and U.S. Bank.  Sister Rosalind Gefre will be giving massages to benefit her schools and clinics of massage.

The regular season begins the following night, Thursday, May 17 and tickets for all Saints exhibition and regular season home games are available now in person at the Saints Box Office, by phone at 651-644-6659 or online at saintsbaseball.com.

Tickets for all Saints home games are $5 for general admission, $8 for outfield reserved and $12 for infield reserved.  Tickets purchased on the Day of the Game are an additional $1 per ticket. Children under the age of 14 and seniors 65 and older receive $1 off the admission price.  Children under 2 that don't require a seat are free.
