Saints Bring Home the Trophy, Win Prestigious Deubener Award

November 15, 2012 at 4:42 PM

ST. PAUL, MN (November 15, 2012) – There were no wacky hijinks, Seigo didn’t get up and sing and no pigs were spotted running around the Landmark Center, but despite all that, the St. Paul Saints made their mark on the business community as they were awarded the prestigious Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce 2012 Deubener Award in the For-Profit Service Category.

The event was held on Wednesday, November 14 at the Landmark Center in downtown St. Paul.  The Saints were awarded the honor from among two other well-respected and deserving businesses, TKDA, a long-time Saint Paul engineering and architecture firm and The Cosmopolitan at Mears Park, an apartment complex that will soon be neighbors of the Saints in Lowertown.

The Deubener Awards honor five local businesses in five separate categories: Nonprofit Service, For-Profit Service, Emerging, Family-Owned and Women/Minority Owned based on outstanding achievement that exemplify growth, excellence, risk, diversity and innovation.

“This is an unbelievable honor for our organization and we are appreciative of the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce for their recognition,” said Saints Executive Vice President Tom Whaley.  “The Saints are just a small part of the Twin Cities community and to be recognized in a manner like this is so rewarding for us. It has been a great last few months for our club.”

In 2012 the Saints once again had a banner season with more than 240,000 fans entering the ballpark, promotions that garnered national attention with their Bounty Night and Night of Unbelievable Fun, continued to be one of the most affordable entertainment venues in the Twin Cities. In September, the club was boosted by the award of $25 million in funding from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development that matched a contribution from the City of Saint Paul and the team for a new Lowertown ballpark.

In honor of Walter & Lydia Deubener, the Saint Paul Area Chamber annually presents Deubener Awards to five organizations that exemplify growth, excellence, risk, diversity and innovation. The Deubeners were the proprietors of a grocery store in downtown Saint Paul and invented the first shopping bag with handles, which increased the store’s business overnight. The couple eventually sold their store and established manufacturing facilities in Saint Paul, with sales in 1919 totaling one million bags.

The Saints open the 2013 regular season at home on Thursday, May 16 at 7:05 p.m. against a yet to be determined team from the Can-Am League.  Group tickets will go on sale in late November with single game tickets going on sale in March.  For more information contact the Saints front office at 651-644-6659 or visit saintsbaseball.com.
