Getting to CHS Field

Saints Can't Overcome RedHawks Bats In 11-3 Loss

ST. PAUL, MN August 25, 2017

The St. Paul Saints playoff chances took a large hit on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.  Knowing they need to win nearly every ballgame, and playing a team ahead of them in the playoff race. the Saints lost 11-3 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.  The loss drops the Saints to 47-44 and they fell 8.0 games behind the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the north and remained 4.5 games out of the wild card with nine games to play.

The RedHawks, hitting .323 over their last five games, came out swinging in the second inning against Saints spot starter Jeff Malm.  Keury De La Cruz led off with a triple into the gap in left-center and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Trever Adams to make it 1-0 RedHawks.  Malm walked the next two hitters and got Devan Ahart to hit into a fielder’s choice.  Yhoxian Medina drove an 0-2 pitch to left for a two-run double making it 3-0.

In the fifth Malm gave up a leadoff infield single to Medina and, with one out, departed for Matt Schuld.  The first batter he faced, Josh Mazzola, drilled a two-run homer to left, his 13th of the season, making it 5-0.

The Saints attempted to come back over the next two innings, but wasted two golden opportunities.  In the sixth Tim Colwell singled and Kes Carter followed with a single to right-center.  Ahart’s throw into the infield skipped towards home plate and got past catcher Charlie Valerio allowing Colwell to score making it 5-1.  Brady Shoemaker then walked and, with two outs, Nate Hanson walked loading the bases.  Tony Thomas, however, popped out to end the inning.

In the sixth the first three hitters all singled: Mitch Delfino, JJ Gould and Maxx Garrett, the latter scoring a run, to make it 5-2.  The top three hitters in the order, however, couldn’t come through with runners at first and second and no outs.

The RedHawks used that momentum to put up five in the bottom of the inning and put the game away.  Medina led off by reaching on a dropped third strike.  Chris Grayson singled and Mazzola followed with a two-run double making it 7-2.  Valerio walked and Schuld came out of the game for Chandler Hawkins.  With one out the Saints intentionally walked Adams to load the bases, but Hawkins threw a wild pitch allowing Mazzola to score making it 8-2.  With the bases loaded and two outs Hanson committed his first error since July 1, a throwing error to first, allowing two runs to score making it 10-2.

The same two teams meet in the second game of the three game series on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.  The Saints send RHP Dustin Crenshaw (2-1, 4.36) to the mound against RedHawks LHP Will Solomon (5-4, 4.69).  The game can be heard on BOB FM.
