Saints Cash In On Five Explorers Errors For 4-3 Win

ST. PAUL, MN June 8, 2014

SAINTS CASH IN ON ERRORS FOR 4-3 WIN OVER EXPLORERS

ST. PAUL, MN (June 7, 2014) – The St. Paul Saints were the recipients of five Sioux City Explorers errors, scoring three unearned runs, as they hung on in the ninth for a 4-3 victory on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,418.

The lone earned run the Saints scored came in the first inning when Joe Bonfe roped a double to left and scored on an Evan Bigley single to make it 1-0.

The Explorers tied it in the third on Mark Sobolewski’s solo homer to left-center, his second of the season, tying the game at one.

That’s when the errors started to pile up and the Saints cashed in.  In the fourth Willie Cabrera led off by reaching on an infield single to third.  Joey Becker’s ground ball moved Cabrera to second.  Brandon Wikoff stepped up and singled off the glove of pitcher Kohei Tsukada.  The ball ricocheted towards second baseman Andres Perez who grabbed the ball and threw it away at first allowing Cabrera to score which gave the Saints a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth Bigley reach on third baseman Soboloweski’s error.  Bigley stole second and scored on a two out single by Brandon Tripp to make it 3-1.

In the seventh the Saints took a 4-1 lead when Bigley led off with a single.  He then took off for second and left-handed pitcher Kenny Long threw to first.  Bigley raced towards second and slid in safely as the throw went into left field.  Bigley headed to third.  Angelo Songco’s sacrifice fly scored Bigley.

It stayed that way until the ninth when closer Dan Sattler was asked to get a six out save.  He labored in his second inning of work.  He walked leafdoff hitter Peter Barrows.  After a strike out of Sobolewski, Todd Jennings walked.  Oscar Mesa made it 4-2 with an RBI single.  Sattler struck out Lang for the second out of the inning.  Former Minnesota Twin Rene Tosoni doubled home Jennings to make it 4-3.  After a walk to Nate Samson loaded the bases, Sattler finished the game off by striking out Tommy Mendonca.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium.  The Saints send RHP Jeff Shields (3-1, 4.21) to the mound against Explorers RHP Wade Morrison (0-1, 1.69).  Fans can bring their dog to the park on Dog Day at Midway presented by University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center.  The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB>
