Saints Ink Former Major League Pitcher Pedro Hernandez

ST. PAUL, MN May 6, 2015

SAINTS INK FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE PITCHER PEDRO HERNANDEZ

ST. PAUL, MN (May 6, 2015) – Anytime you can sign a player with big league time you jump at the opportunity.  The St. Paul Saints did that with their most recent signing, inking former Major League left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez.

The 26-year-old Hernandez brings 16 games of Major League experience to the Saints, 14 of those games came with the Twins back in 2013.  He is 3-5 with a 7.33 ERA in 16 games (14 starts).  In 66.1 innings pitched he walked 26 and struck out 33.

Hernandez spent last season with the Colorado Rockies organization and spent all, but one game at Triple-A Colorado Springs.  With the Sky Sox he was 6-7 with a 6.44 ERA in 19 games (17 starts).  Hernandez was called up to the Colorado Rockies at the end of July and made one start giving up three runs in 5.2 innings to the Chicago Cubs.

The San Diego Padres signed Hernandez as an amateur free agent in 2006 out of Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela.  After spending the 2007 and 2008 season in the Dominican Summer League he came to the United States and spent 2009 between the Low-A Eugene Emeralds and the Arizona League Padres.

Hernandez moved swiftly through the organization reaching Triple-A Tucson in 2011.  On January 1, 2012 he was traded to the Chicago White Sox along with RHP Simon Castro in exchange for outfielder Carlos Quentin.  Hernandez made his Major League debut on July 18, 2012 allowing eight runs in 4.0 innings in a start against the Boston Red Sox.  Hernandez gave up three home runs, two to Cody Ross and one to Adrian Gonzalez.

On July 28 Hernandez was traded along with infielder Eduardo Escobar to the Twins in exchange for LHP Francisco Liriano.

In 2013 Hernandez began the season with the Twins and earned his first Major League victory on April 27 when he threw 5.0 shutout innings against the Texas Rangers.  In all, Hernandez pitched 14 games (12 starts) with the Twins during the season and went 3-3 with a 6.83 ERA.  In 56.2 innings pitched he walked 23 and struck out 29.  Following the season Hernandez was granted free agency and signed with the Rockies.

The Saints have signed 20 players during the off-season, 10 position players and 10 pitchers and currently have 27 players on the roster.

The Saints will open CHS Field on Thursday evening May 21 at 7:05 p.m. against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
