Saints Lose Battle Of Aces, 5-2 To Goldeyes

August 25, 2012 at 11:25 PM

ST. PAUL, MN (August 25, 2012) – It was a battle of aces on Saturday night at Midway Stadium with the St. Paul Saints sending their top pitcher Robert Coe to the mound while the Winnipeg Goldeyes sent one of their best pitchers to the mound Ace Walker.  In the end the Saints had their seven game winning streak snapped losing 5-2 at Midway Stadium in front of 6,041 dropping them 1.0 game behind the Goldeyes for the Wild Card lead with nine game remaining.

With the game scoreless in the third Barabro Canizares reached on a throwing error by third baseman Ronnie Bourquin.  Josh Mazolla made the Saints pay by crushing a two-run homer off of Coe, his 17th of the season, to give the Goldeyes a 2-1 lead.

The Saints answered back with their home run hitter, Ole Sheldon, who clubbed a solo homer to left in the fourth, his 20th of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1.  It would be the last hit for the Saints until the ninth inning, a stretch of 16 in a row retired by Walker.

The Goldeyes took a 3-1 lead in the seventh when Coe hit Price Kendall to lead off the inning.  Mike Coles sacrificed him to second.  Coe left the game for reliever Chris Odegaard.  He got Chris Roberson to ground out to short for out number two, but Yurendell de Caster singled to center driving home Kendall.  Coe went 6.1 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out three.

The Goldeyes added two big insurance runs in the eighth when Mazzola led off by reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Tanner Townsend.  He moved to third on a single by Luis Alen.  Left-handed pitcher Taylor Sinclair came in and faced pinch hitter Jose Duran.  With the infield in, Duran hit a grounder to Townsend at short and the Saints were able to get the force out at second leaving runners at the corners with one out.  Dustin Klabunde then took over on the mound for the Saints and he got Amos Ramon to fly out to shallow left.  After Kendall was hit by a pitch to load the bases Coles doubled down the left field line that scored two runs and made it 5-1.

In the bottom of the ninth the Saints tried to mount a comeback and it started with two outs.  Willie Cabrera doubled and Sheldon followed with an infield single.  Bourquin then hit a grounder down the first base line that hit the first base umpire, Cabrera scored and the Saints brought the tying run to the plate.  The Goldeyes countered with their closer Chris Bodishbaugh who got Jose Hernandez to pop out to de Caster at first to end the game.  Walker went 8.2 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking three.

The same two teams meet Sundat afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in game three of the four game series.  The Saints send RHP Luke Anderson (5-2, 3.21) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Chris Salamida (5-6, 3.86).  It is Swiss Family Robinson Family Sunday.  The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB or in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
