SAINTS PUT ON A RACE FOR THE ACTIVE RUNNER AND COUCH POTATO WITH THE ANNUAL RUNNING OF THE PIGS 5K/ZER0K
ST. PAUL, MN (April 18, 2014) – It is often imitated, but never duplicated. There are those that erroneously feel they have the world’s shortest race. You can search high and low, from one end of the globe to the other, but there is only one place to find a race that begins and ends in the same place in the time it takes to shoot off the start/finish pistol. It isn’t in Grand Rapids, where they ran a .1K race, or the 25 seconds it takes to go 55 paces in the UK or even the 1/2K in Downtown St. Paul. No, the honor belongs to the always inventive St. Paul Saints who will once again host their annual Running of the Pigs 5K/Zer0K race in conjunction with Scheels, Saint Paul Corner Drug, Saint Paul Athletic Club and Whole Foods Market.
On Saturday, April 26 the Saints will host a race that can be enjoyed by the marathon runner, weekend jogger or those that can barely lift up the remote to change the channel on their TV. The Zer0K race is the only competition in the world where everyone is on a level playing field. “Runners” in the Zer0K receive a special t-shirt that says, “The Original Zer0K” with a photo of a pig lounging on a couch, a cold adult beverage following their grueling race, opportunity to sit on couches and cheer on the 5K runners, a post-race meal and a ticket to a future Saints game.
Along with the Zer0K, other race day events include the Youth Fun Run, the Mascot Trot and the main event, the 5K which will begin and end by Midway Stadium’s home plate.
Participants can check in or register between 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. with the Youth Run kicking off at 9:00 a.m. At approximately 9:15 p.m. mascots from local sports teams, area businesses and, of course, “The Devine Swine,” Mudonna will compete in the Mascot Trot.
Runners will line up for the demanding Zer0K at 9:25 a.m. with the race ending at 9:25 a.m. They will then retire to couches to eat “healthy” junk food” from Whole Foods Market. The 5K Run/Walk will follow starting at 9:30 a.m. The race begins around home plate of the ballpark and will take runners along Energy Park Drive towards Randolph St. and then towards Snelling before finishing at the same area as the start. The race will be timed and is sanctioned courtesy Anderson Race Management. Last year’s winner among men was Paul Hillson, with a time of 16:34, and female Kate Tarakley, who finished in 21:08.
The post-race light brunch at the ballpark will be provided by Whole Foods Market. They are located at 30 Fairview Ave S. in St. Paul.
Registration in advance is $35 for adults and $20 for youths for the 5K and $20 for the Zer0K. An extra $5 will be charged for registering on the day of the race. The 5K entry fee includes a short-sleeve 2014 “Running of the Pigs” T-Shirt, a post-race meal voucher and a general admission ticket to the Saints game. For guests of race participants, extra picnic and game tickets are available for $6.
