May 08, 2012 at 8:40 AM

WINNIPEG, MB (May 7, 2012) – The last time the St. Paul Saints and Winnipeg Goldeyes played the Saints scored a run in the bottom of the ninth in Game 5 of the first round of the 2011 playoffs.  That run vaulted the Saints into the American Association Championship Series.  On Monday night at Shaw Park the stakes were far less, but the Saints scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning for a come from behind 8-7 win.

With the Saints down 7-5 in the top of the ninth Tanner Townsend roped a one out double.  Chris Cates followed with an infield single moving Townsend to third.  Jose Hernandez collected his third hit of the night with an RBI double scoring Townsend and moving Cates to third as the Saints trailed 7-6.  Hernandez finished the game 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI.  Jon Townsend’s sacrifice fly scored his brother from third tying the game at seven.  Jake Krause, whos grounder in Game 5 resulted in an error that scored the series winning run, once again reached on an error that scored the go ahead run.  He reached on second baseman Matt Cusick’s error that allowed Hernandez to score the eventual winning run.

The Saints scored four runs in the first inning on an RBI single from Willie Cabrera, a two-run double by Ronnie Bourquin and a single by Hernandez as Bourquin scored on an error on the play.

Saints starting pitcher Wes Roemer was masterful working 4.0 innings of shutout ball allowing just two hits while striking out four.

The Goldeyes got to Alberto Rolon in the fifth with a six run inning, but he settled down in the next two innings allowing just one hit.  Bret Severtson pitched two hitless innings of relief while striking out three.

The same two teams meet in the final game of their brief two game exhibition tussle with a 7:05 p.m. game on Tuesday night.

The Saints first home exhibition game takes place on Friday, May 11 at 10:35 a.m. against the Cannon Valley All-Stars.
