South All-Stars Led By Seven From Defending Champion Laredo Lemurs

ST. PAUL, MN July 19, 2016

The All-Star Game at CHS Field is two weeks away and the American Association has announced the South All-Stars. The team is comprised of the four South Division teams in the American Association and the six teams from the Can-Am League.  Led by the defending champion Laredo Lemurs, with seven representatives, the South will roll out the top home run hitter in the American Association, the leader in all the Triple Crown categories in the Can-Am League and some of the top pitchers in both leagues.

 

          Each teams is represented with the Wild Card leading Lemurs leading the way with seven All-Stars and the South Division leading Wichita Wingnuts with three.  The Ottawa Champions and Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League and Texas AirHogs of the American Association all have two players represented.  The Trois Rivieres Aigles, Sussex County Miners, Capitales de Quebec and New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am and Joplin Blasters of the American Association each have one.

 

          The South All-Stars were selected through a vote of each manager from the South Division and Can-Am League with the three reserves and each pitcher selected by Laredo Lemurs and South Division manager Pete Incaviglia.  As the defending champions of the American Association Incaviglia is rewarded with managing the South and will bring his coaching staff of Pitching Coach Ben Moore, Assistant Coach Gibby Vela-Cuellar and Bench Coach Mike Meyer.  Joining them on the coaching staff will be Rockland Boulders Manager Jamie Keefe.

 

          Below is the starting nine, including designated hitter, three reserves and 10 pitchers for the South All-Stars.  The starting pitcher will be announced by South Manager Pete Inciviglia at a later date.  The North Division, including the St. Paul Saints representatives, will be announced on Wednesday. 

 

1B Art Charles (New Jersey Jackals) - .345-15-51.  1st in Can-Am League in total bases (137) & home runs, walks (41), extra-base hits (32), slugging percentage (.675), T1st in triples (5), 2nd in average & on-base percentage (.464) & 3rd in runs (44) & hits (70).  Leads first baseman in most games played (49), total chances (448), put outs (403) & double plays (36).

 

2B Brian Bistagne (Texas AirHogs) - .301-7-22.  T1st in American Association in stolen base percentage (1.000).

 

3B Danny Mateo (Trois-Rivieres Aigles) - .316-4-32.  4th in Can-Am League in hits (68) & T4th in games (54)

 

SS Junior Arroyo (Rockland Boulders) - .359-5-33. 1st in Can-Am League in batting average, stolen bases (28), on-base percentage (.498) & hit by pitches (21), 2nd in runs (49) & slugging percentage (.511) & 5th in walks (33). Leads all shortstops in games played (46), total chances (201), putouts (58), assists (130) and double plays (25).

 

C Marcus Nidiffer (Rockland Boulders) - .246-11-37.  2nd in Can-Am League in home runs & 3rd in RBI & slugging percentage (.497). 4th among active catchers in caught stealing percentage (13.2%)

 

OF Harrison Kain (Wichita Wingnuts) – .358-2-28.  2nd in American Association in average, T2nd in triples (4) & T3rd in on base percentage (.435).

 

OF Brent Clevlen (Wichita Wingnuts) - .316-13-44.  T1st in American Association in extra base hits (30), 2nd in total bases (128) & slugging percentage (.561), 3rd in home runs,

 

OF Burt Reynolds (Texas AirHogs) - .289-18-36. 1st in American Association in home runs & slugging percentage (.631) & T5th in total bases (118)

 

DH Denis Phipps (Laredo Lemurs) - .267-9-30.  Leads the Lemurs in home runs and RBI.

 

RESERVES

INF Alvaro Rondon (Laredo Lemurs) - .262-1-25. 1st in the American Association in sacrifice hits (7) and 5th in stolen base percentage (.917)

 

OF Jay Austin (Sussex County Miners) - .330-2-30.  T1st in Can-Am League in games played (56), 2nd in hits (71) & stolen bases (27), 4th in average, T4th total bases (95) & 5th in stolen base percentage (.900).  1ST among outfielders in putouts (117)

 

C Zane Chavez (Laredo Lemurs) - .268-4-23.  9th in American Association in caught stealing percentage (21.7%)

 

PITCHERS

RHP Victor Capellan (Joplin Blasters) – 2-0, 2.12 ERA and three saves in 25 relief appearances. Struck out 37 in 29.2 IP and opponents are hitting .144 against him.

 

RHP Ryan Beckman (Laredo Lemurs) – 5-5, 2.55 ERA in 13 games (12 starts).  T2nd in American Association in complete games (2), 3rd in innings pitched (84.2), T3rd in shutouts (1), 4th in ERA & T4th in strikeouts (62).

 

RHP Jeff Inman (Laredo Lemurs) – 2-2, 2.15 ERA and seven saves in 26 relief appearances.  7th in American Association in reliever points (21). 

 

RHP Barret Loux (Laredo Lemurs) – 3-1, 1.42 ERA in six starts.  Struck out 35 in 38.0 IP while opponents are hitting .236 against him.  Leads the team in ERA.

 

RHP Jose Nivar (Laredo Lemurs) – 1-1, 3.00 ERA in 25 relief appearances.  Struck out 36 in 30.0 IP while opponents are hitting .222 against him.

 

RHP Lee Sosa (New Jersey Jackals) – 5-3, 2.90 ERA in 14 games (10 starts).  8th in Can-Am League in ERA.

 

RHP Austin Chrismon (Ottawa Champions) – 3-3, 2.59 ERA in 11 starts. 2nd in Can-Am League in innings pitched (73.0), T2nd in complete games (2) & 5th in ERA

 

RHP Daniel Cordero (Ottawa Champions) – 7-1, 3.94 ERA in 11 games (10 starts).  1st in Can-Am League in wins, 3rd in winning percentage (.875) & T4th in complete games (1)

 

RHP Jon Fitzsimmons (Quebec Capitales) – 1-0, 0.35 ERA and 12 saves. 1st in Can-Am League in reliever points (38), T1st in saves & 5th in games finished (16)

 

RHP Frankie Reed (Wichita Wingnuts) – 4-2, 1.50 ERA and 11 saves.  1st in American Association in games finished (22), 3rd in reliever points (37) & T3rd in saves.

 

          All-Star Monday begins at 6:00 p.m. on August 1 and includes the iHeart Radio Celebrity Softball Game, the Select Heartland Chevy Dealers Homerun Derby and musical acts Chris Hawkey Band and Soul Asylum.  The 2016 American Association All-Star Game takes place on Tuesday, August 2 at 7:05 p.m.

Tickets for the 2016 American Association All-Star Game on Tuesday, August 2 begin at $5 for berm seating (available only on day of game in person at the box office), $9 for bleacher seats, $15 for the drink rail, $17 for outfield reserved, $19 for infield reserved and $21 for home plate reserved.

 

Saints Box Office hours on non-game days are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  On game days, the Box Office will open at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday and will remain open until 15 minutes following each game.  Tickets are always available at saintsbaseball.com.
